Bathu and Drip are two South African lifestyle footwear brands that have entered the Top 100 most admired brands in Africa in 2022. Both brands offer unique and colorful designs that appeal to young and trendy consumers.
Bathu, which means “shoe” in the local vernacular, was founded in 2015 by Theo Baloyi, a former accountant who wanted to create a shoe that represents his culture and heritage. Drip, which was launched in 2019 by Lekau Sehoana, a former street vendor who used to sell second-hand shoes, aims to empower and inspire the youth through its slogan “Don’t let your background determine your future”.
Both brands have expanded their retail footprint across South Africa, despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, and have increased their marketing spend to raise awareness and loyalty. They have also leveraged social media and e-commerce platforms to reach a wider audience and showcase their products. Bathu and Drip are examples of how African brands can succeed in the continent’s growing consumer market by offering innovative and authentic products that resonate with the local culture and aspirations.
